Deleting your AI history

30-second gist~30s read

"Delete" doesn't always mean gone. On most AI services, deleting a chat removes it from your view immediately, but a copy is retained for safety/abuse-prevention purposes for around 30 days, after which it is purged. If your conversation was already used for training, deletion does not remove what the model learned.

If you want more

What "delete" usually means~1 min
  • Out of your view: instant. The conversation disappears from your history.
  • Out of backups: ~30 days. Most providers retain a copy for safety review and to comply with subpoenas. Times vary.
  • Out of training data already used: not possible. Once a conversation has trained a model, you can't unbake it from the dough.
  • Out of "memory" features: separate switch. Memory is stored differently from chat history. You may need to clear it separately.
